Eczema is a condition caused by dryness of the skin. It is a predominantly genetic condition that worsens in the winter when the air is very dry. The treatment of eczema flare-ups is possible with the help of creams and natural products. Natural treatments can help to moisturize the skin, prevent and combat inflammation, and reduce swelling and prevent infection. Although natural treatments cannot cure eczema, they help manage the symptoms.
Some of the effective natural remedies that can be tried at home for the treatment of eczema are discussed herein:
1. Aloe vera gel
The gel from the aloe vera plant is a great soother to treat eczema. It is antibacterial and helps heal wounds and prevent infections that occur when a person has dry skin. You can use the gel directly from the leaves of the plant. Aloe vera can be easily grown at home.
2. Apple cider vinegar
It helps improve the acidity levels of the skin. People with eczema have less acidic skin than others. The skin’s defense to infection is weaker when it is less acidic. Diluted acidic vinegar, when applied to the skin, helps to maintain the skin’s acidity levels. Vinegar should be diluted before application otherwise it can burn the skin. It can be applied and left on the skin for a few hours and then washed off.
3. Tea tree oil
The anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties of tea tree oil can help relieve dryness, itching of the skin, and prevent infections.
4. Honey
It is a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent that is very good for healing wounds, boosting the immune system function, and help the body fight infections. It prevents infections and speeds the healing of eczema wounds. Honey is also a great moisturizer.
5. Colloidal oatmeal
Pure colloidal oatmeal, also known as Avena sativa, is made from oats that have been ground and boiled. It is a great skin-healer. It reduces skin itching and skin dryness. Add powdered colloidal oatmeal to a warm bath and soak in it. This is safe for people of all ages.
6. Coconut oil
Coconut oil contains fatty acids that are very good for the skin. It moisturizes the skin and as the oil is a light oil it is very comfortable to use on the skin. It also acts as a natural barrier against infections.
7. Evening primrose oil
This oil is extracted from the primrose plant and is used both topically and internally to treat eczema. It is rich in omega-6 fatty acids and gamma-linolenic acid, which help to prevent inflammation in the body.
8. Sunflower oil
This oil is extracted from sunflower seeds and is great for protecting the skin’s outer layer. It helps to keep the moisture and bacteria out of the skin. It can be applied directly to the skin after a bath when the skin is damp.
9. Witch hazel powder
Made from the bark of the witch hazel shrub, this powder is a very good topical remedy for skin inflammation. It can also be applied to calm inflamed skin and to dry-up oozing areas affected by eczema.
Natural remedies are good for the treatment of mild eczema; in case the condition does not improve it is better to opt for medicines or antihistamines after consulting a doctor.
